IMHO, I think maybe that whether a herp is nocturnal or not might be a good
criterion for the need for UV light.  I understand that Leopard Geckos are
nocturnal, and so do not require UV.  They do need calcium supplements.
Mine always hides completely and presumably is active at night.  I imagine
this is to avoid the heat.  Wish I could lower the heat at night like
they're supposed to have.
