I have one. The sticky side goes against the tank. I don't think it would
add much heat through 6" of substrate. But, you definitely don't want
your animal to be able to have direct contact with the glass on the other
side of the heat pad. I siliconed ceramic tile over my heat pad in the
corn snakes cage. So when they burrow in the bedding they can't sit
directly on the glass. It gets quite hot.
