You can use regular shipping tape or duct tape along the edges of the mat -
or just set the tank on top of it. Not having adhesive on it definitely
makes these easier to use as a temporary supplemental heat source (coldest
winter nights), or for use on quarantine tanks and the like. The other
brands with the adhesive are almost impossible to remove without destroying
the heat mat...
The directions that come with the Cobra mats state -
"With glass or plastic vivariums, the T-Rex Cobra Heat Mat may be attached
to either the outside or the inside, as these materials readily allow heat
to pass through them. Double sided sticky pads or strong adhesive tape can
be used to fix the heat mat, positioned only along the clear plastic edges,
so that no heat output is blocked. A sheet of Styrofoam (expanded
polystyrene) of at least half an inch thick (10mm to 12 mm) can be used on
the back of the heat mat to reflect all the produced
heat into the cage. This styrofoam should be cut to cover the entire base
of the vivarium, not just to the size of the heat mat, if the heat mat is to
be positioned under a glass or plastic vivarium. This will help to ensure
that the base is not stressed, which may cause it to crack, especially if
constructed of glass. It will be found to be convenient to cut out a small
recess from the Styrofoam to accommodate the thickness of the electrical
cord's terminal block. This prevents local pressure on the terminal block
stressing the base of the vivarium."
(There's more, but my fingers are tired! That's the relevant part...)

John
