Subject: [Gecko] Life span of Phelsuma?
Hi Jason and all,
> I was wondering if anyone has any info on the average lifespan of wild
phelsuma? I can't imagine that in the wild it would be >very long.
I do not know of any reliable studies in the wild regarding there normal
lifespan.
I would though by looking at my animales say that they tend to live a bit
longer then 3-5 years under good
circumstances.The bigger ones as P.mad subsp.and P.standingi should be
getting close to, and sometimes
pass 20 years.I now of specimens 25 years old and still producing good
offspring.The smaller ones in my
collection seams to produce normal amounts of eggs and hatchlings to at
least the age of 7 years. After that
they seams to just stop laying eggs from one year to another, and start to
lose weight as you described.There
are of course some animales that can live much longer and still produsing
offspring.For example I have one
female P.flavigularis imported 1988 as adult and still going strong.I do
think one important thing to get helthy
and longlived Phelsumas are to not put pairs together to early. As a rule I
wait until the age of 2 years before
introducing a female to a male.
