Hi Folks,
thanks to Don for filling us in on some details on this sad topic - and it
sounds more
and more like a stunt that had (almost) happened similarily in germany:
About a year ago I got to see a list of "to be imported" animals, featuring
such as
rare Phelsuma, Chams, Mantella and other precious animals from Madagacsar,
and was
offered the possibility to oder from these with the promise of valid(!)
papers and
a completely legal deal. I was quite suspect about this, as there were even
klemmeri
on the list (which so far have never be exported legally in larger numbers),
but my
contact insisted that it would be a fully legal import. In the end I watched
for the
deal to happen but (unsurprisingly) nothing was imported ... and this even
though
the original papers and permits from Madagacar were said to be in order. The
reason
for this is (as any dealer in europe should know) that the european union
has
completly banned the import of some species (as any Mantella, for example),
and has
strictly limited others (as for Phelsuma) to only a few species ... so you
can have
whatever valid papers that you wish, they will not leave the custums offices
should
they arrive. And it seems that about the same thing has now happened in the
U.S.,
the only difference beeing that the german dealer did not try to bring them
in after
he discovered that no clearance would be given ... .
So I hope that those rare animals will be well taken care of - it would be a
real
waste had they just been. Please keep us informed -
regards, Hartmut
PS: Almost needless to say, but nevertheless ... most Phelsuma are already
bred
successfully enough, so IMHO there is no real need for imports anymore ...
