Coccidial infections can be a beast to get rid of! Some animals will break
with it after they have been clean for many months, while other animals
never break with it again. Bearded dragons are one of the worst to treat.
For some reason it is hard to get rid of and they will often break with it
again later. I warn people to look at their dragons feces and if it starts
to look different then they should consider a fecal exam to check for them.
I do however believe coccidia should be treated if it is seen. Since we
house animals in cages, it is hard for them to stay away from their feces.
Coccidia is a direct parasite and if an animal keeps picking up more and
more shed oocysts, they can get super infections. I think the best one can
do is treat the infection when you know you have the problem and disinfect
the cage everyday when you are treating the animal, so they are not re
infecting themselves.
