The best way to preserve specimens is by "fixing" the deceased animal in 
formalin which is a mixture of formaldehyde and water. This includes injecting the 
animal internally with the fluid. Leave it in the formalin for a period of 
time then soak it in water. For long term storage most zoological institutions 
use ethyl alcohol and water (70% alcohol and distilled water is preferred). 
Almost all of the books published by the SSAR have this information in the back 
of the book. I think it may even be available for free at the SSAR website. 
Amphibians may have to be treated differently than reptiles because of the skin.
