The best way to preserve specimens is by "fixing" the deceased animal in formalin which is a mixture of formaldehyde and water. This includes injecting the animal internally with the fluid. Leave it in the formalin for a period of time then soak it in water. For long term storage most zoological institutions use ethyl alcohol and water (70% alcohol and distilled water is preferred). Almost all of the books published by the SSAR have this information in the back of the book. I think it may even be available for free at the SSAR website. Amphibians may have to be treated differently than reptiles because of the skin.
