The best way to preserve specimens is by "fixing" the deceased animal in formalin which is a mixture of formaldehyde and water.Depends on why you are preserving it. Formalin causes some changes in tissues - particulalry changes in color. Alcohol does this to a lesser degree.
Diagnostics=formalin
Systematics = either, though many prefer alcohol
This includes injecting the animal internally with the fluid.Better still, make a small incision, access a loop of bowel and, using a syringe, fill the intestines with the fixative. Then fill the coelom.
