Catriona,
Actually it would be pretty ricky to put the two males together as they often will fight. There's a chance they won't, but that's not a chance I personally would feel comfortable suggesting you take. However, another option, so that you don't feel that your lone male is too cooped up, is to do as you say. Put the females and one male in the big tank and set up a smaller tank for the other male. However, for one small animal, you could get away with a 10-gallon tank on its end (tall way) so that the screen top essentially becomes the front of the tank. This really doesn't take up a lot of room.
Then to assure that you don't feel that you're restraining the male to too small a tank, you can actually swap the males out of the big tank. This will give them equal time roaming the larger enclosure, and may even improve your breeding rate if that's something you're hoping to accomplish as well. I've got two juvenile ciliatus in a ten-gallon arranged that way right now, and even though they're half grown, the tank feels rather large for them still. One adult could be pretty comfortable in such an enclosure, especially if the males are traded out of the big enclosure every few weeks.
Hope this helps!

Rick

I was offered a pair of R. ciliatus. I am very limited on space and do not want to add another cage to the reptile room. I have a pair already that is housed in a tall tank that is at least 60 gallons. Would that be enough room to house 2 pairs, or are the male so aggressive that they will still fight? I suppose if the males are too aggressive, I could breakup the second pair and house that male separately and add the extra female to the large tank, so my male could have an extra female. I just hate to have to put him in a small tank. I like my animals in large cages where they can roam.
