Hi Catriona...

I really wouldn't try housing two breeding pairs together. You could break them up and house the extra male separate, though. If you do that, make sure to keep close watch on the two females. I once lost the tails on both females of an established 1.2 group when I added a new, very aggressive female. They eventually settled in, but I did end up losing one of the tailless females in the next year or so, and she was not very old, either (stress?).

I have often kept multiple males together, but only if they were raised together. I usually dump all hatchlings from each bloodline into it's own large tank (with lots of hides). There will be a large range of ages in there at once, including obvious males down to just hatched babies. I've had as many as 12 in the tank at the same time. As long as everyone gets appropriate size food, I've never see any problems or lost any tails. Of course, if one of the the older kids ends up being female, all hell could break loose, but that doesn't happen often. I realize this is not the conventional way to raise these guys, but it's worked for me for years!

Gonna see you at Frog Day this year???

I was offered a pair of R. ciliatus. I am very limited on space and do not want to add another cage to the reptile room. I have a pair already that is housed in a tall tank that is at least 60 gallons. Would that be enough room to house 2 pairs, or are the male so aggressive that they will still fight? I suppose if the males are too aggressive, I could breakup the second pair and house that male separately and add the extra female to the large tank, so my male could have an extra female. I just hate to have to put him in a small tank. I like my animals in large cages where they can roam.
