I think it will be an improvement.

Other graphics programs I work with operate this way.

With the long-standing behavior it is sometimes difficult to select  
the thing you want when objects overlap in gschem. When zoomed in,  
you may even select a large object (like a title block) that has *no*  
visible piece on the screen! Even for visible objects, it can be  
difficult to understand their extent: the target rectangle is invisible.
