One way I've seen bus pins work is that a pin called A<1:5> is just short hand for a collection of pins called A<1> A<2> ... A<5> and its in that order. So externally you just hook up any 5-bit bus (which can be FOO<1:5>, BAR<5:1>, or something like GND,VDD,BAZ<1:3>).
