Betul petani padi di Jepang dapat subisidi pemerintah. Sebelumnya pasar beras ditutup untuk beras luarnegeri, tetapi akhir tahun 1970 dipaksa oleh USA untuk dibuka dan supaya impor beras California yang kualitasnyya mirip atau sama dengan beras produksi dalam negeri.
