It was causing problems because anything that changed that info would make gem5 rebuild and all the regressions rerun. I got rid of it a while ago since I didn't think anybody was actually using it and it got rid of the headaches. If you really want it back right now you could make a patch that reverts my change (it wasn't that long ago so it should be easy to find), and then if you and/or other people actually used it then we could figure out a way to put it back that without reintroducing the problems.
