The latest MySQL 4.1x, 5.0x should work fine out-of-the-box with SAM
without any hocus pocus.
If one of these is installed and it's not the latest there is no real
reason to upgrade.

MySQL 5.1.x, the current GA (general availability) works fine too, for
me at least.
I thought I had to enable "old passwords" but neither the my.ini or
Workbench -> Server Admin -> Configuration -> Security have it enabled.

Summary: If you're not certain it's broke it probably isn't which means
there's no need to fix it.

I'm saddened to see the GUI tools EOL notice and a shift to the Workbench.
So far my opinion is it is less intuitive and less user friendly than
the Query Browser or Administrator.
