Hey y'all,

I'm a brand-shiny-new newbie (to Linux, but not Unix) having just
installed Mandrake 8.1 last weekend. I'm up and running, but having a
few problems that 'Net research hasn't shed much light on:

1) I can't mount the floppy drive, even if I try at the command line
with filesystem types msdos, vfat, ntfs, or auto. Error I get:
"Unknown Device". My /etc/fstab entry looks like this:
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto
user,iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0,sync,exec,codepage=850,noauto 0 0

2) I get a Segmentation Fault at the end of shutting down. I don't
know if this is an actual problem or not. Earlier this week I had
several nasty crashes (had to power off at the power strip), and
perhaps this did some damage?

I will going to the newbie meeting on Monday, at the very least to say
"Hi", but I'll probably have plenty of questions. I also have a
Lucent winmodem that I may need some help with if I can't figure it
out over the weekend. Until this morning I was getting the list
digest; hopefully it'll switch over before I leave work today, as I
don't have 'Net access from home because of the winmodem.

If necessary, I'm happy to wipe the HD and start fresh (maybe the ISOs
from my friend were corrupt?), I have all my data backed up, but I
don't have copies of the CDs myself. I'm not yet attached to any
particular distro.

Thanks for your thoughts and advice, and I'm looking forward to
meeting folks!
Trish
