Hey y'all, I'm a brand-shiny-new newbie (to Linux, but not Unix) having just installed Mandrake 8.1 last weekend. I'm up and running, but having a few problems that 'Net research hasn't shed much light on:
1) I can't mount the floppy drive, even if I try at the command line with filesystem types msdos, vfat, ntfs, or auto. Error I get: "Unknown Device". My /etc/fstab entry looks like this: /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto user,iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0,sync,exec,codepage=850,noauto 0 0 2) I get a Segmentation Fault at the end of shutting down. I don't know if this is an actual problem or not. Earlier this week I had several nasty crashes (had to power off at the power strip), and perhaps this did some damage? I will going to the newbie meeting on Monday, at the very least to say "Hi", but I'll probably have plenty of questions. I also have a Lucent winmodem that I may need some help with if I can't figure it out over the weekend. Until this morning I was getting the list digest; hopefully it'll switch over before I leave work today, as I don't have 'Net access from home because of the winmodem. If necessary, I'm happy to wipe the HD and start fresh (maybe the ISOs from my friend were corrupt?), I have all my data backed up, but I don't have copies of the CDs myself. I'm not yet attached to any particular distro. Thanks for your thoughts and advice, and I'm looking forward to meeting folks! Trish p.s. Hardware info: looking over my notes, in my haste I forgot to get the info on my floppy drive (d'oh!). I'll try to get that later today, but here's the rest: motherboard: Soyo SY-K7ADA with ALi MAGiK1 chipset AthlonXP 1500+ processor 256MB RAM harddrive: Seagate Medalist Ultra-ATA, 6.5GB CD-R/W: Goldstar 32x 10x 40x videocard: KASER S305-32A AGP(chip SIS305) modem: AZTECH MDP 7800V-U Voice/Data/Fax PCI Chipset: Lucent Mars II Chipset id: DSP1646 network card: 3Com Fast Etherlink XL PCI 3C905B-TX 10/100 base T
