Dustin,

Most Cisco switches have GBIC uplinks. The GBIC modules are only a few =
hundred dollars. You will need to decide whether this needs to be a =
routed connection or whether it may just be switched. This will =
determine which switch you should use. If you have any questions you =
may email me directly.

Subject: [brlug-general] Fiber optic..

Anyone worked with fiber before? I've never worked with it before, so =
I'm=20
pretty unfamiliar with the equipment needed. I have a client that has a=20
fiber run between two offices located pretty near each other (they are =
on=20
the same property). The cable company just ran a fiber optic line, =
that's=20
it. So now he needs to buy the equipment.

Don't ask why there is no method to the madness. This is just how they =
work. :)

Anyway, is all fiber the same? What kind of equipment does he need? I =
know=20
that the cable company will need to terminate each end of the fiber=20
somehow. Next, I suppose we need some type of CSU/DSU on each end? What=20
lights up the fiber?

Basically, what kind of equipment is needed? Personal experience, links, =

articles, or whatever are appreciated.

Regards, Dustin
