My suggestion for buying or not buying the cable modem is this: 1. If you are going to be in your same location for more than 1 year, then buy the modem. They cost around $100. If you rent then after 10 months at $10 a month for the cable modem rental then you'll have paid for the purchase. The down side here is that if your modem breaks you don't get a new one for free. Whereas if you're renting then you'll get the new modem for free. My Toshiba PCX2200 I found out has a 5 year warranty. But how many hoops will you have to jump through to find out that the modem is bad and try to get Toshiba to replace it??? or any company for that matter. If you aren't renting the modem then Cox may blame any problems on the modem and claim they can't help you.
2. If you might move locations in 6 months or you thing that in 6 months you might try DSL then it may be best to just keep renting your cable modem. And with the rental you get Cox's full support of the modem and a "theoretical" replacement anytime policy. (That's my theory.) If you buy the modem then you do have the possibility to sell the modem on eBay at some later time. I had cable service when it was [EMAIL PROTECTED] I didn't buy the modem then, but I had service for about 1.5 years. Then i moved and had to get new service. It was cheaper to get "new" service rather than "move" the old service. Which to me doesn't make since. I had to pay $5 or something to keep my existing email accounts in tact. That doesn't make since to me. It's just laziness on Cox's part. I manage a network, I know what it takes to keep an account in tact. I decided to buy the modem this time around. I save $10 a month, and hopefully I'll be here more than 1 year. It should pay off then. When I'm done with the cable modem then hopefully I can sell it on eBay without much loss. Plus I qualify for the GeauxBox. It's a collaboration Cox is doing with LSU. Basically you get a $10 a month discount on internet cable service. It's a good deal. That's my 2 cents. -- Brad Bendily - CNA On Sat, 12 Oct 2002, Cleve Allison wrote: > Brad, I'm not sure if they will swap it out or not. But I'm thinking > about buying one possibly. > Cleve
