In Charters network -- not that good of one --, you can put RJ-11 upto 
300ft, and keep a half-assed signal.  When you hit the house, you have 
to put an amplifier on the line too, and you are amplifing a half-assed 
signal.  So even if the modem did jump online at over 300ft, your speeds 
and packet loss would be horrible.
