At LIGO we are using a Sun solution that consists of >7 Terabytes of
Fiber Channel (basically gigabit over fiber) Raid disks. The software
we are using is SAM/QFS. It is pretty pricy unless you get a good deal
from Sun. However, QFS allows fine grained control of readers/writers.
It also allows simultaneous writing to disk from multiple clients.

It is a very nice solution, but I am not sure how much you can spend. I
can get you in touch with some people that know more about it. There
are also newer versions of the RAID disks now... They have gone up from
~512 MB RAID 5 to ~1.2 TB (I think?) per "brick". They are 4U rack
mountable.
