Depends on what is meant by "the market". For instance, you may need 20 Windows servers to do what 1 big IBM or Sun unix box could do. That means Microsoft shipped 20 times as many licenses as IBM/Sun.... does that mean Microsoft owns the market? Certainly not... but if you listened to Microsoft FUD, then that is the case....
Or if you wanna count revenue, i guarantee those 20 Windows server licenses cost a hell of a lot more than the one copy of AIX or Solaris. (we're not talking hardware costs here...). So does Microsoft own the market now? I still don't think so.... It's impossible to compare apples to oranges, but MS marketing has made a science of it, and have done a great job making themselves look good. It's funny how when we're talking TCO (total cost of ownership), MS comes in lower. But when talking revenue/market share, MS comes in higher... -Ray On Wed, 26 Feb 2003, John Hebert wrote: > To be truthful, only the web server market is ownt: > http://www.netcraft.com/survey/ > > I've "read" that the "regular" server market is ownt by Microsoft, but that > could be due to M$'s warchest of advertising dollars.
