Don't forget that Novell now owns Ximian, who has the strongest hold on the Linux Desktop (they did Gnome) than any other vendor out there, and SuSe is known for its desktop implementation also. I think Novell is well-positioned for now and the future.
And, they are not competing against Microsoft on this platform (WordPerfect Office). I hardly see Microsoft releasing its Office suite for Linux. But, stranger things have happened.
