Ditto what Jason says: don't run package-select or dselect at the end of the install.
Do yourself a favor and read this first: http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/index.en.html before you go any further. Experiment with apt on a test install. Go back and read the other docs (http://www.debian.org/doc/) when you have more questions. http://www.debian.org/doc/devel-manuals#policy are good too. When you ask for differences between woody and RH9, I'm not sure how best to answer you. I assume that RH9 is fairly stable because it has been out a while, but it's been a looong time since I ran RH. Here's something that might help (http://www.debian.org/releases/): stable=woody testing=sarge unstable=sid Debian takes some getting used to, but it is a very well thought system with a nicely constructed release process tied to a nicely done package management system. <shields mode="up">There is a reason that Debian is so popular, and IMO, it is _not_ because they emphasize free software.</shields> It is because it was intelligently engineered by the Debian community without a direct profit motive, so it's missing the bells and whistles of other distros like RH, Mandrake, etc. IMO, rpm was nice in its time, but apt is far superior.
