Read the help when you first boot the install disk.
You can specify the 2.4 kernel with a boot parameter
of "bf2.4", I think.

Debian errs on the side of caution for newbies, but
allows the hard core geeks the flexibility to do what
they need. Debian has been accused of moving too
slowly in its releases, but like Kevin and others have
pointed out, you can always either compile what you
need or add testing or unstable to your
/etc/apt/sources.list.
