It is not rare at all. In fact, I may be going work for a project in the near future that has 34 million in funding from a private individual. You'd be very surprised how much private funding there is in science. The project I refer to is an astronomy project which has ABSOLUTELY no hope of making a profit off of the payoffs from the research. Not like we are going to reach light speed anytime soon, so there is no chance of visiting the systems that this project will study. Also, who do you think is funding embryonic stem cell research?
