I know for a fact that you can't just do a quick power cycle of the modem. I'm not sure how long it takes but you need to leave the modem off for at least 2(5 would be better) minutes when you're switching devices on the modem. Meaning if you have your desktop plugged directly to the modem then you plug in a laptop, on my particular modem you won't get a connection. I litterally have to turn off the power of the modem for 2-5 minutes. I have a Toshiba 2500 i think. I'd have to go look to see the number, but I'm sure it's a toshiba. Seems kinda dumb, but that's the way it is. I had to call cox once cause I couldn't get a second machine working. The tech told me to powerdown the modem for 5 minutes then it would work. And it did. Boy it drove me nuts too, cause what i was actually doing was connecting my Linux router instead of my desktop. And the darn thing wouldn't work. So I was very pleased when I found out that tidbit of information! BB
