Chris,
I've been to the CACRC and from what I remember, the
target hardware platforms are fairly standard. David
and I even played around a bit with disk imaging using
PartImage from a Knoppix CD, though I had to leave (it
was a lunch break).

Excellent suggestion.

Again, check out Feather Linux. Based on Knoppix,
stripped down to lite-weight apps, runs great on old
hardware. I know this from personal experience.

The CACRC (www.cacrc.com) has _lots_ of test boxen. A
whole warehouse full in fact. Note that the CACRC is a
non-profit organization. They must sell the PCs in
order to pay the salaries of the people (many!) who
receive, refurbish and recycle PCs. Giving them away
would require someone to pay for their salaries, which
would mean tax money, which would mean politics gets
involved, which would mean it would ultimately become
a boondoggle like so many other LA state programs.
I think the CACRC is doing _great_ as it is right now.
They have been growing for years now based on their
current successful method of selling refurbished,
recycled hardware. $30 for a refurbished complete PC
with OS is an excellent deal, even for people with
low-income.
