Mono is the most exciting project that I know of in the free/open source community, but that is my biased opinion, as I am a .Net developer. Lots of potential here in the mixed Windows/Linux environment that we are going to live in for the next few years, until Microsoft becomes exclusively a home entertainment company (my prediction).
