Send them links. Even my AOL using mom can cut and paste an IP address with port number. I make them simple gallery pages with Igal or konqueror and send them links via email. You would be surprised at what people can do, given an incentive.
I served with boa for a long time but have moved to caudium. http://70.177.55.67:1024/caudium.html Nothing fancy required. Just a P90 with 48MB RAM or so. The cable connection is a little slow, despite the increased upload rates. I'm serving the family 1 to 2 MB images. Igal helps by loading up the next imagewhile you look at the current one. This is an example: http://70.177.55.67:1024/photo_album/chron/2005_03_25_elizabeth_and_ellie/ It's been more useful to me than the family. I have html access to classwork for my friends and ssh access to classwork ,music and other stuff. It takes time to move things, but it's fast enough to be practical for about 100 MB transfers. Compared to download speeds, upload takes forever. Konqueror brings sftp to the level of click and drool, which is very nice. My little brother has made use of it, but everyone else in the family is on Winblows which I would not trust to connect by ssh even if there were free clients as nice as konqueror for them to use. So, the family is limited to browsing pictures and that's a shame.
