You may find this comes back and bites you in the backside, although I hope not. (Blake, not you specifically - it was just your post I selected to reply to.) I enjoy the banter, occasional duels, and what I perceive as an overriding camaraderie. I belonged to a LUG that had a newbies list,and a general list. Flames and a few interesting debates, fueled by a few individuals with differing personalities got to a point where an "anything goes, unmoderated" list was created. Personalities got involved to the point where some talented people left, and others ceased helping the genuine requests for assistance. Worse, others ceased asking questions, presumably because they were afraid of getting caught up in a war. I have no idea about member numbers, but that really doesn't matter. List traffic has declned: List Sept 2004 Sept 2005 Oct 2005 to date Newbies 29K 11K 2K General 411K 30K 77K Unmoderated 7K Nil 1K (moderator asking why no traffic) The unmoderated list had Nil traffic in August as well. In Sept 2003 traffic peaked at 80K. And when I mention "traffic", I really mean archive size. Note also that General List size is "text" size, and the others are Gzip'd text size, so direct comparison of volumes isn't easily comparable. Trends on each list are comparable however. It would seem the freedom of an unmoderated, anything-goes list comes at a price, so I earnestly suggest you all consider if it is worth it. BTW, I am sad to say I was one of the people that caused a degree of angst in this LUG. There. I've come clean. I objected to two people's attitude; their way of attacking people.
