after testing mepis, feather, puppy, and others i settled on dsl for my 166mhz 32mb toshiba tecra, you may have seen me dragging it about at sig meetings. With the help of members i have learned to configure stuborn hardware and load numerous packages for the system. I would be happy to help you with it if you need help. I chose to work with live cd versions for the excellent hardware detection they provide, and it's great to just pop a cd in and see how it works before commiting to the installation process. I also have been rebuilding and repairing old pentium laptops like this one and selling or giving them to friends and co workers (about 10 in the last 2 months). I am making very little if any money, but thats not my main goal. I want to keep these perfectly good systems out of landfills and i want to spread the word on linux. Whenever i try to explain linux to friends their eyes glaze over, but when i pop a knoppix cd or dvd in their computer and show them around they gain a whole new perspective. they can't believe all that stuff is free! My next goal (as i have spoken about with some of the other brlug members at previous meetings) is to change and personalize the apperance of dsl and give these disks to places like computer exchange to put on old systems they are currently selling with no os. I think a "BRLUG live cd" would be a great way to introduce our club to new prospective members. if any of you are intrested in joining me on this project please let me know. carl w. "Adam J. I'd like to know what anyone would suggest for a Pentium MMX 166 with 16MB RAM. I'm really not looking to do any upgrades. Can it be done? My plan is to remove Win95 and give them to some of my students. John Hebert posted something for a laptop with similar specs. I think Mepis worked fine for him.
