@ Bill

I wouldn't recommend using those awful extra shift-lock keys like [.?123],
[ABC] etc. It's agony to type a number list that way. But I can type: 1 2 3
easily on my "system keyboard" by never leaving the [ABC] mode.

My system keyboard is shown at:
https://code.jsoftware.com/wiki/Guides/iOS#System_Keyboard_.28onscreen.29
If you stroke down gently on the "q" key it types: 1 …etc, and you can then
use the spacebar in the normal way.
I think this is called "rocking" the key.
Likewise all other keys: if you rock it, you get the (grayed-out) symbol
above the main white symbol.

Are you using a localized keyboard where this interaction is not possible?
(Other users: do you share Bill's problem with the absence of the old j701
keyboard?)

I hate the system keyboard, and use a bluetooth keyboard whenever I can.
(My bt kb only cost me £8 or so.) But I don't deny it's bad UX to be forced
to use a keyboard that's different *in the slightest way* from the one you
use habitually.

However, because specialized keyboards are such a pain to maintain, and
incur so many gotchas, I won't prioritize reintroducing the old j701
keyboard into j901 for iOS. At least for as long as it is a 1-person
project.

Meanwhile, I wouldn't discourage anyone from reverting to j701 if they just
can't get on with j901. I think Apple are going to keep j701 in App Store
for now. They were threatening to remove un-maintained apps. So j901 has
served its purpose, even if it's only been to secure the continued
availability of j701.
