I'm also active in using J (and before the 90s in APL) for constructing
digital systems in a more "reliable" way. My focus is NOT in digital
hardware but in developing firmware for SIMD architectures. I am aiming
for quicker and more quality realisations and for bringing interactivity
(-:fun) back into development. It departs from earlier work of Brooks
and Blaauw from their IBM-time. Currently I am writing my PhD
dissertation.
