I'm using TwinView, so the 3120 is the sum of the 1440 laptop width and
the 1680 external display width, and the 1050 is the max of the 900
laptop height and the 1050 external display height. So, yes, it is a
_very_ wide screen (one "display" spread across two monitors).

The other primary option, which I haven't had the time to figure out
yet, is to configure it as two displays. I'll likely need to figure
that out before I try to display stuff on a projector.

17" laptop display and 20.5" external display, IIRC. Yes, that
surprised me.

... which could explain both the J and the WebEx problems, for WebEx is
partially, at least, a Java app, and non-Java apps _seem_ to be
displayed okay (I'll be _really_ embarrassed if I find out everything
has been distorted all along, but, for example, circles (the Firefox
icon) do appear round, as does the Ubuntu logo in the Applications
menu.

The NVIDIA X Server Settings window shows 212x115 on a 3120x1050 pixel
(373x231mm) display. FWIW, the physical dimensions are approximately
those of the laptop display; I guess that /could/ be reasonable for
TwinView.

It's a GeForce 8600M GS GPU.

I can try that later today (hopefully). That seems like a reasonable
next step; thanks for the suggestion.
