I think it's even simpler than that: I just set up my system for two
separate X displays, and I think I generally like it better, given that
my two displays have differing sizes.  Everything works, including Java
stuff and the panels on both screens.  The only thing I can't do is drag
windows from one display to another.

For anyone following along, that does mean you can't readily run Firefox
on both displays at once, for it will see it as two instances.  You can,
apparently, run firefox -P to have it select an alternative profile, but
then I'd have to figure out how to share bookmarks and the like.
Symbolic links might make that possible, but I cheated and installed
Konqueror as well.  On those client occasions when I need a browser on
both screens, I can now run two different browsers.
