Don, I agree with most of what you've said, and my impression was that most of the posts to this thread fit in to your category 3 rather than your category 2. Tracy's post certainly made it clearer to me what you were suggesting. Personally though I'm still not convinced that the benefits of a new, additional set of symbols outweigh the negatives, but seeing some concrete examples might help - a suggestion echoed by a number of posts. Obviously you can't attach images to posts on the mailing list, but you could put them on a page on the Wiki.
