It has been suggested here that potential users of J are turned off by the 
symbolic primitives. I find the turnoff to be more specific - the turnoff 
for me came from the two character primitives - whereas I had been 
immediately attracted to the one character primitives of APL.

My experience was that those who had a problem with APL primitives mostly 
had trouble with the Greek primitives, because they had never learned Greek 
or a language with a similar alphabet. One of the potential advantages this 
gives to J for teaching is that the Greek is gone.

I have looked at developing one symbol alternatives with some richness in 
meaning to replace J's two character primitives. I hope to soon propose as 
examples those that I can produce fairly quickly.
