Thanks for the pointer. I looked at the gramps posting, but the sourceforge links there were broken. I tried some general searches and found a variety of links to gtk2_prefs, some of which worked.
I decided on the brute force approach and deinstalled Glade and the GTK+ that came with it. After rebooting, the problem was gone.
