That's actually quite funny! For many years, my pen pals in USA used to address their letters to me placing Singapore in China ! Singapore is 3 hours away from Hong Kong (by air!) the nearest city in China, though only about 10 minutes away (by boat) from Indonesia.There has never been any likelihood of isolationism going defunct over here! Most Americans have no concept of international geography (I, too, when it comes to the Asia-Pacific area). The person on the phone probably thought you said "Austria".
But Americans are a funny lot. Funny=wierd not funny=haha. ;)
