Uhm, can I ask since your a contractor, what type of

these people need?

Netware running accounting software (Great Plains crap). A number of
companies around here run this junk.

some will be switching to AppGen, but it's an expensive proposition and
takes time.

Netware I've played with a little ( 4.0 ). Great Plains I've heard of, but never seen or touched. I remember seeing adds for APPGEN flipping through the Linux Journal. If those clients of yours do upgrade, I hope you have lots of help ( ouch ).

I forgot about stuff like this. Heck, My boss was running something called 'Phone Bizz' for customer database, and he decided to upgrade to the W2K version 3 years ago, personally, without making a backup, at the beginning of a long weekend.

Let's just say that afterwards, I found out the hardway that the customer database was big, and everyone, including the techs, were able to increase their typing speed by 20 words a minute after that weekend :)

I think I'll shut up now, and stick to being a telecom guy :)

[ I'm a telecom guy, not a computer guy ]

anymore there's a difference? I have to understand/work telecom issues all the time.

Hmmm, as a telecom guy, I only have to deal with around 50
different makes and models of PBX, KSU, Voicemails, wireless
phones, etc. I infrequently go beyond that to something
as simple as TCP/IP network trouble shooting, VOIP, or
firewalls.

However, customers are usually asking for more
and more hardware solutions for those services.
( Cisco, NORTEL, symantic ).

Our company does telecom and network cabling, but I
doubt you ever get the chance to do as much as myself and
my fellow techs do, since we laid off our cablers in Nov 2001 :)

I haven't touch C, C++, or anything else in quite a
while. Not since school.

all else is fine, but some are also locked into AutoCAD.

And Autodesk in the US never has and looks like never will create AUTOCAD for anything other than WINDOWS based platform, I just took a peek at the site. I didn't know that.

I always thought http://www.linuxcad.com/
was a viable solution, but I have never touched or
tested it.

As I said before, I'm a dummy :)

Well, I think Linux has a bunch of great games. More (and free) than
comes with M$. Of course if you have _lots_ of $$$$ to waste on games
(most folks here don't) ...

I'm in the same boat, and I don't have time to play games.

So there are still stumbling blocks.

Thank you David, I needed and appreciate the education.
