Hi,
I think a special one of a kind meeting can take place, I'm not in any an organiser but I think, this can be arranged, like one we had for KDE, Debian birthday party. and your questions might be answered there.
as it has been said, the FOSS in general and Linux in particular is not that much accepted in businesses, due to the lack of certain applications and also coders. For a company that works on a 3d application nothing can replace CATIA, solidworks and others on the free software side, and as there are no copy write laws, regarding to these softwares, and the lack public interest in a "Free" software, or a "FREE" anything, Linux is not publicly accepted yet. Free as in freedom BTW.
as there is no difference in price, between the latest windows operating system, and a Linux distro, or even the abundance of windows software available, which, in some cases is cheaper! you can buy everything on a DVD, and not waste the expensive bandwidth on downloading software when you can just buy it for one tenth of the price of the bandwidth.
and as iiriix stated the community is consumer only! and very much MS windows based, also some "core" mac users, the "elites"!
Linux is considered as something as a waste of time! or useless, not good for desktops, its just a Server OS.
the lack of support makes programming for Linux in Iran, just wasteful, as its not portable to windows environment. as windows is still the dominant computing platform, not only in homes, but also in universities, and most if not all major or minor work environments.
The biggest concern that is around FOSS, is how can a software that its source is out in the open can be good for a company?! and with this question, you would see that FOSS would be a big NO! and no matter how hard you try to explain that, most people wouldn't expect to contribute to FOSS, by people I'm referring to bussines, specially in Iran.
I could be wrong, but that's my opinion as a non programmer open source software user.

sorry for the long email!

regards

Hi ,

Well, there is no clear statistics in this regard. What I guess is in spite of having some active LUGs in different cities and some forums and distros, we've yet to work to increase awareness about Free Software and GNU/Linux. Unfortunately our community is a kind of consumer-only community and there is no much output to the world's FOSS community (except 1-2 successful samples like Choqok). Why? There are several underlying reasons which should be taken into consideration while answering to this question. It's longer that I can write it down here. ;) It would be great if we can meet, then we can discuss about it. :)

Salaam everyone

Thank you for your answers. I would like to meet you and discuss. Only on January 1 2013 I am unavailable. Do you meet other wednesdays or other days? Or maybe at work or studying? We could meet for tea :-)

I am happy to hear that there are several active LUGs. In Denmark we are discussing the demise of the LUGs because now Linux is very easy to install etc and there is a fragmentation because FOSS is becoming more mainstream but also specialized in specific projects. But many activists want to build the greater open source community and also be part of the international community. Your concerns are our concerns.

I have heard before about parsix, but  I suppose you are also active in many global projects and distros because of the open nature of FOSS. I would be happy to hear more about specific projects you are engaged in or proud of. Do you think that FOSS is becoming more accepted also in Iran?

Kind regards,
Bjarke
