Hi John, in reply to your posting of today:

I moved from BT to Cable&Wireless (now NTL). I don't know if
there's an original NTL offering which is different . Phones are okay
but there's no caller ID feature.
> For everyone's information, I believe that NTL offers a service comprising:
> 1. cable-TV
> 2. Cable-telecoms
> 3. 56k modem-compliant internet connection
I only have experience of 1 and 2

Yes. I moved from analogue to digital a few months back. There's an
Access pack at around 10/month and various interest packs (e.g.
music) but for 23/month there's a Maxi-pack which is all the
non-premium channels (64 including five radio channels)

They say it's around 20% cheaper but there are various arrgangements
to suit your call patterns (local, international etc.)

Optical yes but not sure of the rest.

Take care- under my digital TV service, there's free and unmetered
email via the TV (doesn't tie up the phone line) but you really need
an infra red remote keyboard (about 32 direct or from Dixons) for
effective input. File attachements are a problem (you can view
incoming images but there's no way of adding or stripping off files)
and there is no address book feature.
There's a free "TV Internet service" but that's a limited selection of
sites and you can't type in URLs as far as I can see. Beyond that they
do offer Internet and Internet Lite access packs but I haven't got
round to subscribing yet. They look attractive but flat fee I think.
Just using the phone service and genesis, my connect speeds are
around 31-33k using a Pace Solo 56k. NTL say they can optimise the
line for higher speeds but again I haven't taken the time to call
them- the help llines are often VERY busy.
