Is the free internet access done down the same
'cable' as voice calls?

yes,but we tend to use one line for internet, and the other for
voice, although we can use either or both

Do you mean your Internet connection is via a conventional electrical
telephone line or are your outgoing signals sent into an optical cable
like NTL's?

Telewest (and afaik, other cable providers) only use fibre to the "box in the
street" from there it is standard(albeit high quality )copper. All cable
phone lines use fibre connections, but not from the house(whatever the
installing engineer tells you ;).

The high speed connection is made over standard copper using a "cable
modem".Similar an ADSL router, and it is a shared connection,as with ADSL it
is "clustered".
Fibre is too unwieldy and expensive for a domestic installation, and over the
short distance to the line rack in the street, is unnecessary.
Cat5 UTP is already being used for Gigabit networking ,and that is just
twisted pair copper. If you dispense with the modem, and send the signal
digitally, you get a much higher speed.

One thing I can tell you is that NTL don't make available
the necessary details, eg dialup number, login, password, pop setting.
smtp setting etc.. Also, as its a cable comms telephone link, I doubt
that it can be dialled into using a conventional telephone line.

Same with Telewest, you have to subscribe before you can access the customer
help section on the website.Cable comms are the same as any other
telecomms. But the new high speed links do not use 56k modems at all. They are
more like Ethernet connections. The cable "modem" is actually a TA.
