Routers in the US go for around $100 (110 Euro or 241 Guilders) and
provide a reasonable firewall without having to leave a computer running
around the clock. Probably cheaper than setting up a Linux box running an
i486 as it does not require a keyboard, mouse or monitor.

Multi-homed means that you can be connected to multiple networks at the
same time. Imagine being connected to the Internet and your workplace
network through two modems at the same time.

A sentinel in computer terminology is similar to wearing a funny hat in a
large crowd: it allows someone to find you quickly. The simplest example
of a sentinel is the ^Z character that was used at the end of CP/M (and
MS-DOS) text files to show the end of a file. RAD: also uses a sentinal
block to find out where and what size the recoverable RAM disk was before
the reboot.
