I wrote it, and your problem seems similar. Are you using that driver??

Check your old x-log for entries like :
>[mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.

I searched around quite a bit, and eventually didn't find
anything useful. Though that x-error gave me a few pointers
towards either the emerging mode-setting support in the 2.6.28 kernels
or the the x86_PAT support within the kernels.

I just disabled them both by adding
>nomodeset nopat
to the 'kernel' line in menu.lst/grub.conf

I also downgraded the x-driver-ati.610 back to version 6.9, which had
worked fine, even without the kernel commandline options.

I must confess though, I've had to much to do recently, and I have not
tried updating the ati driver to 6.10 again(the opensource driver, not
frglx), I just keep it masked for the moment. Maybe I'll try tomorrow,
maybe those kernel-cmds help.
