I know exactly what you mean. I have a radeon 9800 (r350/r300)
which is really acting up lately. And I need/want a replacement.

My system is also still agp-based, which just adds to the trouble.
Buying a 'new' agp-card almost certainly puts you at a disadvantage,
because you will pay more, fore less so to speak.

So I've just been 'hanging' on, waiting for the 'right time' to do a
full update. As for the GC, I will stick to amd/ati, way back as I got
the radeon 9800 I 'HAD' to use their really crappy driver(back then)
until a viable alternative was available. The free driver is still
slow, but its getting there, definitely.
A new card, would probably be a 4780 or something, for which there is
already basic 2d support out there (in freedomland) and as far as I
know, the next release (6.12) should bring basic accel-support.
So, I guess I may 'HAVE' to use fglrx for a while, but chances are, not
for to long :)

The card I'm referring to above, once had the same problem. The original
fan just stopped, 20secs into uptime, leading my system to hang maybe
10-20min later, depending on load. I replaced the fan, and the card is
still running today (the orig fan broke in 2005!), however recently it
has begun getting slightly dodgy, it seems on heavy loads especially
(gaming, big textures, certain shaders).
