We'll have split ebuilds for 3.4. Probably monolithic ones as well, but definitely split ones. In fact we already have them; the splitting itself is complete, we're working on unrelated issues now. We're going to put split ebulds for kde 3.4.0_beta1 in portage once beta1 is released publically, which should be in a few days. (Masked, of course.)
Hmm, are split kde ebuilds going to become the default in the future? I really hope not. In my opinion, this is one of the reasons kde is superior to gnome.
