The split ebuilds include -meta ebuilds that have deps corresponding to the monolithic ebuilds. Fex., you can 'emerge kdebase-meta', which will pull in the packages derived from kdebase.
Was there anything else you wanted?
The major problem is, kde becomes a *major* pin in the ass if you ever want to uninstall it. That plus is makes keywording all the sub-programs a tedious job.
