Hi Enno,
I'm no expert, but I think with ATI cards you want to enable

DRM in your

kernel but not choose any of the other options there, and then emerge
xfree-drm and not the ati-drivers package.

FWIW I use a 2.6.0-mm kernel with an Asus A7N8X dlxe mobo and ATI 9700pro graphics card. I have nvidia-kernel-1.0.5336-r1 and ati-drivers-3.7.0. Opengl-update ati. Drm off in the kernel and apggart as a module and for both chipsets. I don't use xfree-drm. Glxinfo says direct rendering yes and glxgears at full screen 1024x768 is 609 fps. HTH.

Just curious why you installed nvidia-kernel. Isn't that just for nvidia graphics adapters? I didn't think it had anything to do with the nvidia nforce2 chipset (which is what you have on your mb, right?)

Cheers,
Kevin
