Samba is a great server, if you properly configure it, and it is very easy with the swat tool(point it to http://localhost:901), you can do it with your browser. When samba is running no one will know that it is linux box, its compatibility with windows is excelent. You can share your printer, file systems etc. Virus protection? I use clamav to scan for viruses in the smtp server but we dont worry too much about windows viruses as our linux boxen are free. > I'd really like to dump XP Pro but don't think I can solve this sort > of stuff on my own. Well I would suggest several things it depends on your linux experience level. First of all you have to choose a linux distribution, if you are a experienced person with linux then choose gentoo, if you are a new user without much experience in linux then please use Mandrake 9.2 as it will ease the pain of setting a distribution working and will introduce you to linux kindly. Also Mandrake has very advanced tools and windows sysadmins who are used to GUIs will feel right at home. So if this is the case you can install mandrake 9.2 by downloading the ISO's and burning the cd's. Later when you are confident andhave learnt a bit more about linux you can switch to gentoo linux.
